Uva Non Grata Gamay, Wine of the Week at Grunting Growler in Glasgow

Wine of the Week: Uva Non Grata Gamay

Buying a whole bottle of a wine you’ve never tried can feel like a bit of a punt. You might recognise the grape, like the look of the label or trust whoever picked it, but sometimes you just want a taste first.

That’s why we’ve started Wine of the Week at Grunting Growler.

One wine, every Thursday to Sunday

Each week, we’ll open a wine from our list for sampling and pouring by the glass. It gives you a chance to explore the bottles we’ve chosen, ask a few questions and find something you might not have ordered otherwise.

Our wine list gets the same care as our beer fridges. This is a way to give a few of those bottles a bit more time in the spotlight.

This week: Uva Non Grata Gamay

Our pick for Thursday 29 October to Sunday 1 November is Uva Non Grata Gamay.

It’s a French red from Boutinot’s Uva Non Grata range, with Guillaume Létang listed as the winemaker. Made from 100% Gamay and labelled Vin de France, it comes from fruit grown in the hills north-west of Lyon.

What does it taste like?

Think fresh red berries, a juicy feel and plenty of freshness. This is a lighter sort of red, with the fruit doing most of the talking.

If you tend to choose lighter reds, it’s an easy place to start. If you usually stick to beer, having a taste is a good way to see whether it’s your sort of thing.

A grape with a bit of history

Boutinot’s story for the wine looks back to 1395, when Philip the Bold outlawed Gamay in Burgundy. Uva Non Grata gives that supposedly unwelcome grape its moment.

A slightly rebellious backstory and a juicy red in the glass. We can get behind that.

Come and try it

Pop into Grunting Growler at 51 Old Dumbarton Road, Glasgow, G3 8RF, and ask the team about this week’s wine. Have a taste, order a glass or pick up a bottle to take home.

Uva Non Grata Gamay is £17 to take away, or £22 for a bottle to drink in, including our £5 wine corkage.

You can browse our wine list online or book a table if you’re making an evening of it.
